A Year in Review: Triumphs and Challenges of 2023

Reflecting on a Year of Growth, Achievement, and Resilience

As 2023 comes to a close, it's time to reflect on a year that has been a whirlwind of experiences, emotions, and milestones. This year has been a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of community, and the unyielding spirit of advocacy.

Embracing New Beginnings and Overcoming Adversities

Starting a New Career Path

One of the most significant changes this year was embarking on a new journey at my local independent living center. This career move not only aligned with my passion for disability rights and advocacy but also allowed me to actively contribute to meaningful change in my community.

Advocacy at Salvatore’s Old Fashioned Pizzeria

A major focus has been on making Salvatore’s Old Fashioned Pizzeria accessible to the Disability Community. This endeavor is not just about physical accessibility; it's about creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and valued.

Health Challenges and Recovery

This year also brought unforeseen health challenges. A severe illness led to a critical situation where I stopped breathing and required intubation and ICU care. This experience was a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of health.

Strengthening Community Ties and Personal Growth

Launching My Personal Blog

In an effort to share my journey and inspire others, I launched a blog on [jensencaraballo.com](http://jensencaraballo.com). This platform has become a space for personal stories, thoughts, and ideas, and features individuals who inspire and motivate within the community.

Maintaining Independence

A significant achievement this year was maintaining a full staff for my CDPAS, which enabled me to stay in my home and avoid forced institutionalization. This is a powerful statement about the value of independence and community-based support.

Technological Empowerment

The acquisition of the iLevel wheelchair was a game-changer. It not only enhanced my mobility but also provided a new perspective – quite literally – on life.

Reconnecting with Family

Reconciling with my estranged mother and bringing her into my circle of homecare workers turned out to be one of the most heartwarming experiences of the year. It’s a reminder that relationships can heal and grow, even after years of estrangement.

Looking Forward

As I reflect on the year, I realize that while some memories might be fuzzy (perhaps due to a celebratory drink or two!), the essence of 2023 remains clear: it was a year of growth, challenges, and profound learning.

What Lies Ahead

As I step into 2024, I am filled with hope and determination to continue my advocacy work, deepen community connections, and embrace whatever challenges and opportunities come my way.

Thank you for being part of my journey. Here’s to a new year filled with possibilities, growth, and continued advocacy for a more inclusive world.
